Department of Defense Award Goes to ME Faculty Member

ME Assistant Professor Marien Simeni submitted a winning proposal which was selected by the Department of Defense for the fiscal year 2023 Defense Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DEPSCoR) competition.
 
Simeni's proposal, "Probing the Ablation of Hypersonic Vehicle Heat Shield Materials Using Pulsed Lasers and Advanced Spectroscopic Diagnostics," will be performed in collaboration with Tom Schwartzentruber from the U's Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics, who will provide modeling and numerical simulation to supplement experiments conducted by Simeni's group. Simeni and Schwartentruber will co-advise a PhD student on this topic.
 
The DEPSCoR program includes a mentorship component between the two collaborators of the award, with Schwartzentruber serving as Simeni's mentor.
 
This is the first DEPSCoR award for UMN ME.
